Rehearsals

Rehearsals are where we turn the script into a play.

Who's in Charge?

During the rehearsal process, actors will fall under the purview of the Director.

The PSM will focus on behavior, capturing blocking, designer/builder/director communications and building their tech crew.

The PSM will act as the “Volunteer Representative”, ensuring that the Director is following the policies of the theatre to include one 10 minute break every hour. They must keep track of the time to ensure actors and crew are released on time and that they are back in places ready to work on time.

The PSM is responsible to ensure actors and crew know call times, and will call the person if they are not on time. This is especially important for youth productions or productions that include youth cast and crew.

Rehearsal Space Set Up

The PSM is responsible for setting up the rehearsal space, including coordinating the schedule with other departments or productions. They are overall responsible for the cleanliness of the space as well. The PSM should utilize the checklist for beginning and end of rehearsals and performances. FIXME This checklist is located in Annex B of this handbook.

Rehearsal Rules

The PSM is responsible for all policies and procedures to include communications policies and adherence to the Code of Conduct. It is the PSM’s job to make sure everyone is where they are supposed to be, when they are supposed to be there, doing what they are supposed to be doing. The Director should not have to quiet anyone, as the PSM should beat them to it.

Every show will have a sign in/sign out roster. The PSM will be responsible to ensure actors are signing in and out.

Feedback/Notes

FIXME Notes something something how shows can be tightened and adjusted if something is not working well for an actor.

Directors should strive to give notes and feedback as much as possible during rehearsals. The PSM is expected to help with their insights as well as ensuring that actors are taking notes.

Notes should be given every rehearsal. Period.

The PSM will also fill out the daily Rehearsal Report and post it via the Production chat to all designers, the director, the Technical Director, and the Producer.

Forms and Products

The PSM will generate or oversee the creation of production forms that are vital to the proper running of the production. These forms include, but are not limited to:

  1. Updated Contact List
  2. Cleaning Sheet
  3. Rehearsal Report
  4. Master Cue Sheet
  5. Cast/Track Sheet
  6. Daily Call Sheet
  7. Props List/Flow Chart
  8. Scene Breakdown
  9. Shift Plot
  10. The sign in/sign out roster

From day one, the PSM should be keeping the Prompt Book up to date to include all cues and blocking.
