Linking Pages

This page tells you how to create a link to an existing page or an external resource. if you want to create a new page, click here.

Linking to an existing page when editing is pretty simple. Say we want to link to the Wiki Admins page - here's the quick version:

  • Type in the words that will make up the link
  • Highlight the words with your mouse and click on the Insert Link (paperclip) option on the toolbar
  • In the Link Configuration popup window, select the Link Target.
  • Click OK
  • The selected link should now glow green.

Lets go into more detail on each step.

Normally, you'd just type in the words that will make up the link. Then use your mouse to select them.

You can also just position the cursor where you want the link to appear and have the wiki copy in the title of the page you want to link to. (More on that below.)

After you've highlighted the link words or positioned the cursor, click on the Insert Link (paperclip) option on the toolbar:

This will bring up the Link Configuration popup window.

The Link target can mean different things depending on the Link Type selected. We'll go thru each Link Type and explain how to use it.

A page in this wiki

Select this option when you want to link to another page within this wiki. In our example, you would use this option when you want to link to the Wiki Admins page.

example_top_right.jpgWhen you select a page in this wiki, the Link target is the location (namespace and name) where this page is stored. It's the location displayed in the tab in the main content area. Fortunately, you can easily select it by clicking the paperclip icon next to the Link target text field.

Clicking the paperclip icon will bring up a popup Link Wizard window.

This window displays the pages in the current namespace and allows you to move up and down thru the sitemap tree to find the page you're looking for. Click on the page you're looking for and the corresponding location will be loaded into the Link target.

In our example, you would click jump to parent namespace until you reached the top namespace, where you'd see people: . Click on people: , then scroll down until you saw people:wiki_admin . Click on it and you'll see people:wiki_admin filled in as the Link target.

This allows you to easily link to a page in other selected wikis. You'll use mainly Wikipedia , DokuWiki and Telephone links. There are many other options, including Amazon, Google, etc.

When you select An interwiki link, the Link target changes into two fields:

link_configuration_interwiki.jpg

the InterWiki field

The InterWiki field lets you select which wiki or phone number you want to link to.

Use wp for Wikipedia, doku for DokuWiki and tel for a telephone number.

For the other options, you can get more information here or view the complete list.

Type in the name of the Wikipedia or DokuWiki page. You can find it in the title of the page or the last part of the page's URL.

For phone numbers, just type in the phone number with dashes or parentheses.

An email address

If you select this link type, simply enter the email address into the Link target.

This link type creates a link to a regular web page, like https://svcommunitytheatre.org/ . Enter the URL into the Link target.

Other

This link type allows exotic things like Windows Shares. You'll never use this option.

This defines what text (or image) is displayed on the page for this link.

Automatic Title

This option uses the text in the Link target field - or the current page title if you are linking to a wiki page - as the text for the link.

Custom Title

This option displays the Link name field where you can type in what text you want displayed for the link.

Use an image as Title

This option allows you to use an image as a clickable link. See add an image for details on all the additional fields you'll need to fill in.

When done filling everything in, click the OK button to complete the process. You'll see the link appear on the page.

After you Save the page, you might want to click on each link and make sure it's working correctly, especially external links.

If you have any questions or problems, ask one of the Wiki Admins.
