What are all these icons & stuff?

example_signed_in.jpg

Wiki pages display a lot of extra stuff compared to a normal web page. Here's what it all means.

If you are using a cell phone, things will look different. You can see the differences here.

Top Left

example_top_left.jpg

In the top left corner is our logo, name and motto. You can click on the SVCT logo or name to return to the Welcome (home) page.

You are here: Shows you where the page is located within the wiki.

Trace: Lists the recent pages you have viewed. Your most recent page visits are at the end of the list.

Top Right

If you are not signed in, the top line will simply display the Log In link.

If you are signed in, the first line your real name and login user name.

If you want to change your real name, email address or password, click on Update Profile.

Log Out logs you out.

Search gives you a easy way to find what you are looking for.

Recent Changes will display list of recent changes for the current namespace (area) - the format is a little weird.

Media Manager lets you view all of the images associated with this part of the wiki.

Sitemap lists all of the pages in this wiki, broken out by namespace (area).

Page Content Area

example_center.jpg

The Table of Contents for the page is normally displayed in the top right corner. It's especially helpful when you have a page with a lot of text. The Table of Contents is automatically generated from the page's headings.

If you are viewing this wiki on a small screen, the Table of Contents will be displayed as just a single heading line. Click on it to reveal the Table of Contents details.

Links within the page content area are displayed using different colors and with different icons. Here's what they mean:

Link Type Description
green links these links will take you to another page within this Wiki
red links red links indicate that the Wiki page has not yet been created. We are constantly adding and updating this wiki. Red links indicate that there's more work to be done.
Internet link this link will take you to an external website
Wikipedia link this link will take you to a page in Wikipedia
DokuWiki link this link will take you to a page in DokuWiki.org, the software we use to create this wiki website
Google link this link will display search results using Google
Email link clicking on this allows you to quickly and easily send an email
Phone number link clicking on this will start dialing the phone number
These buttons are displayed only when you are signed in. They allow you to edit the current section of text (back to the most recent header). Useful if you have a large page and want to make a change in just one area.

FIX ME!

Sometimes you'll see FIXME or DELETEME These are placeholders indicating that something needs to be fixed, added or otherwise adjusted - or deleted. We use these when we have something that needs to be done, but we do not have the time (or the information) to do it right now.

Right Hand Buttons

example_right_signed_in.jpgexample_right_options.jpgThe right hand buttons will vary depending on if you are signed in and if the page has an incomplete edit. If you move your mouse over the buttons, a description for each button will appear.

Button Description
Edit this page - allows you to edit this page
Create this page - allows you to create a new page
Edit Draft - the page was being edited by you, but the changes were not saved. When you click on this button, the differences between the edited and un-edited version of the page are show. Click one on the buttons at the bottom to continue: Recover draft - pick up where we left off. Delete draft - forget the unsaved changes and start over. Or Cancel - don't delete or change anything.
Show page - it will take you back and display the current version of the page. :!: If you are editing the page, clicking on this may cause your changes to be lost.
Old revisions - Allows you to view previous versions of the current page, see the changes between different versions, and “rewind” the page to a previous version.
Backlinks - Displays a list of other pages in this wiki that reference (link) to this page. You can think of it like a See Also list. (Or what else do I need to check, if editing.)
Manage Subscriptions - You can have the wiki send you an email when there are any changes to this page or this namespace (current area). If you do this from the Welcome (home) page, you can get a notification when ANY page in the wiki changes. And PLEASE use the digest email option.
Rename Page - Used to rename the internal name and location for this page. Normally, if you want to tweak the title of the page, just change it when editing the page. Do not use this option unless you know what you are doing.
Back to top - Click this to return to the top of the current page.

example_footer.jpg

The first line shows the internal location of the page file, when it was last modified, and by who. Yes, every change is tracked and logged.

The second line is our copyright notice.

Questions?

If you still have questions about what you're seeing, ask a fellow SVCT volunteer or feel free to contact one of the Wiki Admins.
